Capstone Project

For my Capstone Project, I evaluated the current library program and determined, with the help of my mentor, that the most benefit would lie in continuing the genrefication project that she began a few years ago with the fiction texts. I have begun to recatalog the nonfiction texts into sublocations of names that make sense to students: geography, social issues, STEM, ancient history etc.

To complete the project, the sublocation will need to updated in the computer, the books will have new labels applied and be relocated physically.

Using the district approved categories and the card catalog, I began making lists of books to be moved, starting with the Health and Wellness list . As we are completing lists, the library aide and I are printing them and using the lists to identify the books getting new genre stickers and marking those that will need new spine labels. The list is then used to recatalog the books under their new sublocation category

The final step will be relocating the books on new shelves. While the new system is meant to assist students in their search for materials, it will take some time and proper signage to guide students. 8 1/2 x 11 inch posters in acrylic will mark each section. Extra space can also be used to advertise digital materials and databases. Weeding will ensure there is enough space to accommodate the signage.

Once the collection is organized, I will be able to see which materials are outdated, damaged or missing so a plan for replacements can be made to update the collection.
